St Jerome’s University Bridges Lecture: Math and Music (2013-02-26)

Date/Time: Friday, March 1 2013 @ 7:30 p.m. Siegfried Hall at St. Jerome's University

Topic: In time & out of tune: Some perspectives on consonance and dissonance

Speakers: Ian Quinn, Yale (music) and Thomas Ivey, College of Charleston (math)

Music has many mathematical secrets. Math is essential to the problem of tuning musical instruments, and helps explain which combinations of musical notes are consonant and which are dissonant. But does this determine what sounds good and what doesn't? The answer -- yes and no -- involves prime numbers, hairy ears, a brain evolved for language, and why you shouldn't pick a fight with someone who plays the kettledrum.

For more information about the lecture (and the series), see sju.ca/bridges.

Referendum Voting Up (2012-02-02)

The voting in the referendum is now open.

Here is the referendum:
Resolved, that for the next three years, no agreement with the Federation of Students shall be approved by Council, but only by a General Meeting.

Yes committee statement:
none given

No committee statement:
For those who are not aware, MathSoc is in the process of working on an agreement with the Federation of Students, called The Societies Agreement. This agreement will replace the current one (which is very old and outdated). This agreement is what lets Feds recognize MathSoc's existence. If they do not recognize MathSoc, they cannot provide us with any support or services. The two most important things they do for Math Soc are collect our fees, and take liability for anything MathSoc does. If something bad were to happen at an event run by MathSoc, Feds would take responsibility and handle the matters. In return, they ask for a little bit of oversight.

By forcing this to go to a general meeting for approval, you will significantly increase the time it takes to get this agreement approved. Council, who meets at least 6 times per term, has spent over a year going over new versions of this document, always sending it back for changes. If this is deferred to general meetings, the process will be slowed down even further.

Furthermore, such a restriction would slow down ANY agreement. This would include any renewals or updates on the agreement. If, for example, we find something in the agreement that needs to be changed, we would have to bring this back to a general meeting. Doing so could slow down an already slow process, and possibly delay urgent updates.

If Feds has to wait too long without an acceptable agreement (from their perspective), they may choose to stop collecting our fees, which would cripple the society. Why is this only a problem for MathSoc and not the other societies? Well, *all* of them have signed this agreement already. MathSoc is the only one that has, for whatever reason, found it to be problematic. Lastly, Council is composed of members of the society who you, the students, have elected to be your representatives. They have done due diligence thus far, which is why the agreement has not been signed yet, and there is no reason to think this will change.

Ifaz Kabir appointed interim VPF (2012-01-02)

Council has decided to appoint Ifaz Kabir, currently a Representative of PM, AM, and C&O, to serve as interim VPF until the conclusion of the election to be held this month.

Referendum & Winter VPF Resignation (2011-12-29)

A petition for a referendum on the following questions has been submitted:

Resolved, that the decision made December 6, 2011 by Council to approve an agreement with the Federation of Students is hereby rescinded.

Resolved, that for the next three years, no agreement with the Federation of Students shall be approved by Council, but only by a General Meeting.

The first resolution is moot, as Council determined that the decision taken was null and void due to a conflict with the bylaws. The referendum will take place only on the second resolution.

Additionally, Gee Gayowski, the Vice-President, Finances for the Winter term, has submitted his resignation. Council will appoint an interim replacement and a by-election will held.

The referendum, VPF by-election, and elections for the vacant seats on Council will, pending Council's approval, be held early in the term with the votes occurring in the third week of classes.

Candidates (2011-05-30)

My name is Jessica Janssen. I am running for the position of VP Finance. I will be going into my 3A term of the Business Admin and Mathematics Double Degree Program in the Fall. I am involved in the Math Faculty by being a MathSoc Director and Orientation Week. I have held many executive positions (ex. SOS, Double Degree Club, UCY) and been a part of many clubs (ex. Lifeguard Team, WIREX). I have volunteered for organizations such as WPIRG, Canada Day, Big Sisters, etc.  I would love to take all of my experiences and skills and use them to serve you to the best of my ability! I am hardworking and would put 110% of my effort into this position. I am enthusiastic, reliable, and most importantly I love math! :D (Why were the Romans so good at Math? – Because X was always 10!)

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi Mathies! My name is Alex Russell and I am one of your candidates for MathSoc's Vice President, Events for this upcoming Fall term. I will be entering my 4A term in Math Studies in the Fall and I am currently your Vice President, Activities and Services. I have lots of experience relevant to the VPE position, and various ideas (many of them currently in the preliminary stages of being implemented) to bring to the table. These include (but are certainly not limited to!):

- Having a firm hold on the first-year affairs program to engage first-years in MathSoc and its services and events.

- Focusing not only on first-years but all students to increase awareness about the society and secure more volunteers and event participants.

- Changing and improving movie nights by expanding the repertoire of events to include more engaging and appropriate ideas.

- Implementing a POS system in the office in order to better track inventory and sales levels and using this as a basis to consolidate and expand on the services that MathSoc offers.

- Building closer relationships among directors, executive, council members, and other volunteers by hosting regular mingling events and promoting inter-team projects.

- Working closely with the external director and other societies to organize and implement campus-wide events, thus building and strengthening inter-society relationships.

For further information on my platform and experience visit “Alex for VPE” on Facebook or contact me at agrussel@uwaterloo.ca or 519 400 3011.

My name is Elizabeth McFaul and I am one of two candidates running for the position of Vice President of Events (VPE) for the Fall 2011 term. I will be going into my 3A term of Mathematics and Business Double Degree in the fall.

I have participated in numerous extra-curricular activities that are relevant to the position, including acting as Charity Ball Director this term and holding the position of Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Double Degree club last winter. I have been volunteering with other clubs and events (WIREX, Think about Math, Ryan's Well Foundation) as well. On the event-planning side, I have spent countless hours as a stage manager for a variety of different productions. This makes me the perfect candidate for managing both people and events.

I have lots of ideas to bring to the table, such as:

-increasing awareness about Math Soc

-more marketing for events to increase participation

-more cross-faculty and campus wide events

-field trips, such as a weekend at Canada's Wonderland

In short, I would make an excellent choice for your VPE! If you have any questions, please feel to contact me at elizabethmcfaul2@gmail.com.
